Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna have taken their relationship to a whole new level. Surprise!
News that the 29-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians star had proposed, 7-carat-style, to his girlfriend of just a few months certainly raised a few eyebrows this morning.
While the talking points are many, the immediately obvious reason that this whirlwind engagement is a particular shocker is that the 27-year-old former stripper and owner of Lashed Bar seemingly threw a wedge between Rob and his tight-knit family.
“I haven’t really seen her that much and I don’t know her as well as everyone else but she seems like a really nice girl and I just haven’t been around her too much,” mom Kris Jenner said on Australian radio’s Kyle and Jackie O Show barely two weeks ago. “But you know, he’s been very, very happy lately and I think he’s in a really good place. I don’t know too much about their relationship.”
Make that their still very new relationship.
But while this coupling seemed at first glance like a fling, especially considering reports last month of trouble in paradise after a rough fight and the fact that Kylie Jenner is still dating Tyga, the father of Blac Chyna’s son, King…
Stranger couplings have stuck. Not everyone can be Joe Manganiello-and-Sofia Vergara-level obvious.
The fact that Rob and Blac share a flowchart-worthy circle of connections, meaning they more or less met through mutual friends, could actually work in their favor. If they have a certain lifestyle in common and are on the same page, all the better.
So here’s some evidence in the form of various other celeb couples who no one really believed in—until they proved everyone all wrong and continue to do so to this day.

Cameron Diaz & Benji Madden: These two tied the knot not just after seven months of dating, but also after Diaz cemented her place in the firmament as someone who could do without marriage—at least as far as what society felt was the proper next move for two people in lover. Well, the movie star-author-lifestyle guru and the tattooed Good Charlotte rocker (who’s six years younger) celebrated their first wedding anniversary in January and just this morning, on Live! With Kelly and Michael, Diaz called Madden “the most delicious and lovely human being on the face of the planet.”
Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth: The jury’s still out on them—but it’s still out on all couples, really. Their initial years-long engagement after falling in love on the set of the big-screen weepie The Last Song seemed unlikely enough, mainly because they were just so young. Then she was country, he was Aussie; she’s into music and was a serviceable actress, but he was trying to be a real thespian… All surface comparisons, nothing that really got to the root of what made them tick. Then Miley burst out of her shell with abandon in 2013, they broke up, seemingly because there was just so much Miley happening… But fast-forward to now, and that engagement ring is back on. Aside from their nearest and dearest, no one really knows whether Miley’s more like Liam, or Liam is more like Miley, or even if Miley is really like Miley. But this seemingly odd duo obviously have a connection that can’t be tamed.
Sarah Silverman & Michael Sheen: The raunchily hilarious comedienne and the classically trained Welsh thesp (who’s also a bit of a Romeo)? Hell yeah! “I’m so happy to have him be a part of my life and to get to be a part of his life. I don’t think I ever really knew what love was,” Silverman said in 2014, pouring it on extra thick for ex-boyfriend and longtime friend Jimmy Kimmel when she was a guest on his show. Since hooking up with Sheen, Silverman hasn’t lost her edge—but she has sharpened her acting chops, guest-starring on his critically acclaimed series, Masters of Sex, and scoring a SAG Award nomination for I Smile Back.

Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton: Still very new, but oh so sweet, this coupling had “rebound” written all over it—initially. Five months after The Voice colleagues went public, however, they’re meeting each others’ families, Gwen is belting out a Blake-inspired hit tune, they’re joking about baby-making… What it sounds like is that Gwen is finally enjoying herself after remaining in a marriage that had major issues for a few too many years.

Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban: They may have been continent mates, but the Australian Oscar winner and the New Zealand-born country music star still seemed pretty random on the surface. They also had a rocky start, with Urban heading to rehab to resolve substance abuse issues not long after they married in 2006. However, after welcoming two daughters together and fast becoming one of our red carpet couples (and between the two of them, they’ve got every single awards show covered!), they are about to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary in June and they still look at each other with that loving feeling.

Beyonce & Jay Z: Well sure, now they’re the peanut butter and jelly of power couples, the unquestionably devoted duo who’ve weathered some weird storms and only emerged as even more of a force to be reckoned with when the storm died down. They just celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary and were together for years before that. But once upon a time, they seemed unlikely. The Destiny’s Child princess coupled up with the rap mogul with the rough past, pop star meets hardcore hip-hop star. But 14 years after joining forces on “03 Bonnie and Clyde” for Jay’s The Blueprint 2: A Gift and a Curse…Bey is still asking their driver to close the partition, please.
